HONDURAS
International Seaports in Honduras:
Honduras has 6 ports located on both coasts: Puerto Coxen Hole, Puerto de La Ceiba, Puerto Castilla, Puerto Cortes, Puerto de San Lorenzo, and Puerto Tela.
Most of these sea ports are small and not suited for international shipping. Puerto Cortes is the only deep water port in Central America and is the main hub for international shipping and containers. However Puerto Castilla and Puerto de San Lorenzo both have storage capacity. San Lorenzo is also the only Pacific-facing port in the country.
Puerto Cortes
Located on the Northern Caribbean coast of the country, Puerto Cortes is the largest seaport in Central America and the 36th largest in the world. Because it is close to US ports in the Gulf, Puerto Cortes is part of the US Container Security Initiative.
Puerto Castilla
This port is located on the south side of the peninsula that shelters Trujillo Bar. It was founded as a shipping site for United Fruit at the turn of the century, and the small village port is now used primarily as a container terminal for Dole Fruit. There is also a small Honduran naval base.
Puerto de San Lorenzo
Located on Laguna de San Lorenzo and sometimes referred to as Puerto de Henecan, San Lorenzo is the only Pacific-facing port in Honduras. It can accomodate limited containers, and has road only access.
